Office Space

Recently, we at Central City Millworks were posed with a chalenge to create a built-in desk that would have up to seven work stations in a pretty small room.  The space is 15′ by 14′ and there are doors, windows and a chimney to work around.  We were, of course, up to the challenge.

We started off by designing the desktop in Corel draw.  With that program we are able to transfer the work to be cut on our CNC router.  This is what we came up with – Plan View.  One of the ways we found to work around all of the uneveness in the walls was to build a splash on the back of the desk and install 2″ off the wall.  2″ gap for cordsThis creates a place for all of the cords for power and phone lines.

We also used eCabinets to design wall shelves.

The pieces were all cut in the space of two days and the installation took three.  All in all the project was quick and easy and the best part is – the client was thrilled with the outcome.

Rebuilding New Orleans

Ever since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in August 2005, the people of Louisiana have been working on rebuilding this great region.  New Orleans has always been known for its hospitality, and it seems like lots of people remembered that kindness in our time of need.

In addition to many high-profile groups, like Brad Pitt’s Make it Right foundation, there are many small organizations who have gotten involved to help re-build New Orleans; one park, playground, or home at a time.

Here at Central City Millworks we have been busy providing the people of New Orleans with affordable, high-end custom millwork and woodwork – Antique Heart Pine flooring, shutters, cabinetry, doors, windows and architectural details.  And our construction division has been busy too.  Hal Collums Construction is set to begin working with the PRC on the first of 11 renovations in the badly damaged 9th ward.

Green Project

Here at Central City Millworks we are constantly finding new ways to use old things.  Some of our machines are 60 years old; we often refurbish existing doors and windows; and we use a large amount of reclaimed wood to build our products.

We are participating in an upcoming event hosted by the New Orleans Green Project where we will showcase our commitment to recycling by using reclaimed wood to produce our entries.  All of the submissions for this event are required to be at least partly recycled or reclaimed and the objective is to make freestanding art, sculpture or furniture.

We are excited about this opportunity because people do not often think “Green” when they think about mill shops.  But at Central City Millworks we are deeply commited to recycling, refurbishing and reusing whenever we can.  All of the flooring we sell is reclaimed Heart Pine.  And we donate all the sawdust we produce to The Rescue Ranch – a nonprofit horse rescue group.

We are submitting two items to the event, a room divider and a table.  Check back then to see pictures of the completed items.  All entries will be on display at Canal Place from Feb 10th through March 14th.

And visit www.centralcitymillworks.com to see more of our woodwork.
