Here in the mill shop at Central City Millworks we have a lot of tools. From huge planers and table saws to intricate chisels. But one tool we have is especially unique for the New Orleans area. It is a CNC router, which is like a huge printer that can cut wood into any shape you ask it too.
For example, when we design kitchen cabinets we put them in a program that knows each individual piece needed to put the cabinets together. Then it is sent to the CNC router, where we load on some wood and it cuts out all of the pieces – and it does it with the least possible amount of waste. Then we just have to put it all together.
The CNC router can also cut intricate designs into wood and can even make beautiful wood carvings. Every day we are finding new ways to use this really amazing tool. Check back here for more pictures of things we have built on the CNC router.
